The 8th "i-ONE NARLabs Instrument Technology Innovation Competition"
Huang, Shou-Rong of Chunder Junior High School, Yunlin County Won First Prize

The 8th "i-ONE NARLabs Instrument Technology Innovation Competition", hosted by Instrument Technology Research Center (ITRC) of National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs) announced the award list today. Huang, Shou-Rong of Chunder Junior High School, Yunlin County won the first prize in high school group. The first prize in the group of college & above was not awarded. Teams from National Taiwan Normal University and National Cheng Kung University were tied for second prize.

With the wave of innovation, creative hands-on implementation has become a influential trend recently. The number of registration team to "i-ONE NARLabs Instrument Technology Innovation Competition" much increased this year and the competition was absolutely intense. i-ONE competition was divided into high school and college & above two groups. In high school group, the first prize was awarded to "Fog Screen with Touch Function" by Huang Shou-Rong, a student of Chunder Junior High School, Yunlin County. The steering committee commented that the winning proposal was creative and practical, and had great functional performance and commercial value.

The second prize of high school group was awarded to "Arms, Legs and Eyes Created by Android and PLC" by the team of National HuWei Agricultural and Industrial Vocational High School. "Palmtop laboratory" by the team of National Dongshih Industrial High School and "Formula Bluetooth Racer - the designing of a drawing car" by the team of National Hsinchu Senior High School tied for third prize. The honorable mention prize were awarded to "Eyesight protecting app" by another team of National Dongshih Industrial High School.

The first prize of college & above group this year was not awarded. The second prize was awarded to "Low Cost Real Time Kinematic Instrument Based on Multi Global Navigation Satellite System" by the team of National Normal University and "Portable and Optical Detector for Whole Coagulation Detection" by the team of National Cheng Kung University. The steering committee recognized that both proposals were highly competitive in terms of functionality and production costs and had great business potential.

The third place award was shared by National Taiwan University team's "A Smartphone-based Fluorescent Microscopy with Cloud Image Processing for Pump-free Microfluidic Cytotoxic Assays" and National Taiwan Ocean University team's "An Innovative Non-Contact and Integrated Measuring Automation System for the Profile Accuracy and Surface". The honorable mention awards were presented to National Chin-Yi University of Technology team's "Development of geometric error intelligent self-examining module" and National Taiwan Normal University team's "A novel sound-exciting type of vibration sample magnetometer"

This competition event was also presented in facebook "i-ONE event", introducing final 13 competition teams and their proposals. The "People Choice Award" online voting got great response and participation and Team of National Taiwan University finally got most votes and won the prize.

In order to motivate young students to apply their knowledge to practical application, ITRC/NARLabs initiates "i-ONE NARLabs Instrument Technology Innovation Competition" annually to recognize and honor creative instrument technical proposals from colleges and high school students at home and abroad. The selection committee is consisted of professionals and scholars from industry, academy and research. Throughout preliminary, the final and on-site, three rounds selection, each proposal is assessed on the basis of "creative", "theoretical" and "operational" criteria.

Number of competition teams increased significantly this year, including many teams from technology colleges and industrial vocational schools. Obviously the talent quality and competitiveness from local vocational education system have been elevated. ITRC expected that participants would have a better understanding of the importance of academic principles in practice through this competition, and learn to think and share, and create hands-on. ITRC aimed to spread the spirit of innovation and inspire young students to create more new technology ideas.

Acting President, Dr. Jough-Tai Wang, of NARLabs, encouraged the participants to build the spirit of innovation throughout the campus to promote Taiwan competitive advantage. He expected having more students to join the innovation teams, learn to think, to share and most importantly, learn to create. He anticipated to initiate a technology wave of innovation in Taiwan through "i-ONE NARLabs Instrument Technology Innovation Competition" hosted by ITRC, to practice the process from "thinking" to "doing" and complete the mission of fostering future science personnel for industrial technology upgrade strength.
